The studio is at the back and features thick walls covered with wool and other material to keep sound out and stop it from echoing inside. The studio hides 11 instruments, including several guitars, a saxophone, an accordion, and a flute. The room is also the main bedroom, with the bed folded into the wall. There are also storage cubbies for their clothes, but they often use them to store more gear.

Either way, you’re a long way towards a viable living space with walls, windows, and roof already in place. We’re halfway through our list of the top ten best DIY School Bus Conversions and this time we’re heading to Europe with @wetravelbybus. This School Bus Conversion is a classic American School Bus conversion in miniature, with the bus being about half the size of a regular school bus. This bus may be smaller than your average skoolie, but it gives you more space than a van and is easier to drive than a bigger bus on the narrow European roads. Even with so much space dedicated to their furry companions, this travelling couple has still found plenty of scale for everything needed to live a comfortable life.

Flat Out Travellers

The interior of her build is extra bright, thanks to the white furniture and roof. Carley at the kitchen of her skoolie conversionCarley loves big trucks and spending time outdoors. So much so, that she’s decided to convert a skoolie into an RV, all by herself. At the back of the bus, there’s a platform bed with lots of storage and shelves around. They converted the new-to-them shuttle bus over five months and recorded the whole build on YouTube.

These are the most outstanding conversions I have ever seen. The build above shows that anything is possible if you truly want it. Having a mobile studio in a bus RV conversion sounds challenging to install, but Cora and Jose Luis show it can be done. Now they are traveling the hemisphere, making art and music together and in communities along the way.

Like wood?

The built-in sofa seating has a bespoke cushion, a glorious smattering of soft pillows, and storage integrated with the cabinets underneath. The mini wood stove helps to keep the interior quite toasty while staying consistent with the farmhouse theme. And it is obviously quite safe to have that in the same place as you eat. Instead, the 62-year-old has spent 20 years converting his 1968 Daimler Fleetline double-decker bus into an all mod-cons home away from home. The couple, who are fans of sustainable living, have also installed solar panels and wind generators to power all the bus’s mod cons.

There is a portable toilet and an on-demand hot water heater here for relaxing showers. Opposite the sofa is a small round table and a set of chairs. The roundness of the table helps to ease any feeling of cramping in this compact space, while the chairs add a touch of rustic charm. But to make it feel a bit more modern, a copper-colored geometric pendant lamp hangs above, offering an alternative to the still-functioning, but not-so-flattering, original lighting in the bus. As we go up another step, we come into the seating and dining area.

This couple wanted to travel, and also wanted to save money to pay off their student debt. His conversion, which runs on waste vegetable oil, is really lovely, with all kinds of custom woodwork he did himself.

They even made a documentary film about it, called "Expedition Happiness." If somehow a storybook cottage and a school bus fell in love and had a child, it would certainly look just like this! The lucky inhabitants are a young family of three in Key Peninsula, Washington. "With a lot of imagination, design-savvy, and skillful craftsmanship, they've managed to transform this vehicle into a whimsical, modern cottage on wheels," writes Kimberly. Lured by the idea of escaping the mortgage miasma and rent rut, a new generation of nomads is proving that a life fueled by wanderlust doesn't require a trust fund. It seems that the American dream is getting a bit of a makeover—as you can see for yourself in this list featuring some of our favorite converted buses.

They’re based in Nebraska and enjoy getting out of the country every now and then, while working online. Carley used different kinds and colors of wood to create a unique feel. There are no awkward shapes to go around with the flooring or walls. According to several reputable authorities involved in Tiny Home development, it costs about $20,000 to $30,000 to convert a Bus into a Tiny House. This cost estimate takes into consideration costs of appliances, equipment, tools, and raw materials used in building the RV.

Thanks to their rectangular shape, building the interior isn’t very challenging. Connor and Kesley in front of Sunny, their shuttle bus conversionAfter backpacking around the world together, Connor and Kesley had planned to get married in 2020. Inside this build, there’s a big kitchen, a platform bed, a couch, and a bath. On top of the platform bed, there’s an elevated single bed for the couple’s child. No, not all bus conversions are rehabbed school buses (though I’d imagine they’re the most common – see Jake’s explanation at the beginning of his video). Our friends over at sister site Gas 2.0 discovered a converted city bus in Israel. We love the white colour scheme of this van conversion, the white ceiling, walls and cabinetry make this space feel bigger than it is. The wooden accents around the windows and cupboard doors complement the hardwood flooring and, along with the dusty green splashes of colour, give the bus an almost nautical feel. This bus looks like something straight out of a design magazine and would be an absolute pleasure to live in. This shuttle bus conversion features a kitchen, a platform bed, a long couch, a table, a wet bath, and a full-size refrigerator.

To cut the long story short, make sure to always check with and abide by the local laws in your state and community before embarking on a Bus conversion project. Now depending on the design tastes of the owner, an RV can either be converted with the simplest of modifications or decked out exquisitely – everything depends on budget. This conversion would require extensive work to be carried out by a secondary manufacturer who would fit additional components to the Bus to make it look like a house. He has since taken the bus on a 5,000 mile tour around the midwestern and coastal United States, though it's since been parked permanently on Hank's family's land, where it's likely to remain for the rest of its life. It used to be that the picture of the American dream included 2.5 children, a car to impress the neighbors, and a tidy home, the bigger the better, with a white picket fence.

But tiny houses come in all sorts of shapes and sizes beyond the stereotypical gable-roofed microhouse on wheels. There are ready-made campers, as well as van conversions—and, of course, the ever-popular bus conversion that is roomier and typically cheaper to renovate than building a conventional tiny house from scratch. One of our favourite features of this School Bus Conversion is the white vaulted ceiling. This curved roof ensures the bus is full of light, making it feel super spacious. The ceiling also nicely breaks up the wood on the walls and floor, complementing it and working together to create a bright space.
